Abstract: The field of variationist sociolinguistics has historically been concerned with
production, establishing correlations between linguistic variants and certain social groups.
However, this approach leaves unanswered important questions that could speak to individual or
group motivations for employing innovative variants. In this talk, I explore recent advances in
sociophonetic perception studies to shed light on these overlooked questions. For instance, why
is a particular variant used more by working-class speakers, women, or younger members of a
community? How is a given variant perceived by in-group and out-group members? Finally,
perhaps the simplest question that goes unanswered in production studies is this: what meanings
do phonetic variants carry? I contend that these questions can be more clearly answered by
perception studies, which provide a nuanced understanding of a variant’s social meanings in
context.
