The symbiotic relationship between University and culture, the main theme of issue 8 of the magazine 360upf
A new issue of UPF’s digital magazine that reviews current issues in an innovative format, has recently been published. The main thread of the latest issue is the importance of culture as a strategic line and it includes reports and interviews on the topic along with expert opinions. It also includes an interview with Oriol Amat, the new rector of Pompeu Fabra University.
The 8th issue of 360upf, the University’s digital magazine that reviews current issues in an innovative format, has recently been published. The main thread of the issue is the importance of culture as a strategic line. A commitment that UPF has nurtured and enhanced with each change of governing team and has naturally led to UPF’s ambitious Cultural Programme, which reflects the historical heritage accumulated to date and adds a new twist to foment it yet further among the university community.
The spring issue of the magazine, available in three languages (Catalan, Spanish and English), devotes several sections to this subject. The “Community” section offers a comprehensive review of the main cultural activities carried out so far; “Zoom” includes an interview with Virginia Soler (BIRCH), a student on the bachelor's degree in Global Studies, who protests against climate change through music. Then, offering further analysis, the “Kaleidoscope” section, entitled “University and culture” includes opinion articles by experts in the field of culture. Finally, the sections “On campus”, with a report on the “Punktocràtor” artwork; “Tres60” with a piece on “El Maria Canals porta cua”; and “Quiztime”, which focuses on the figure of Dostoyevsky, complete the cultural part.

In addition to these pieces, the “Profiles” section of 360upf includes an extensive interview in with Oriol Amat, full professor of Financial Economics and Accounting and, since May, the new UPF rector. It reviews the main lines of the mandate that is just beginning.
This edition of the magazine is rounded off with the “Innova” section, with an article devoted to the spinoff Lucid Technologies, which provides new technological products to automatically improve colour in film productions; the “In network” report, which covers the fifteen years of UPF’s financial aid for solidarity and development cooperation; and, in the “In Depth” section interviews with Angela Y. Davis, flamboyant doctor honoris causa by UPF, and Ton Mansilla, alumni of the bachelor’s degree in Law in the “Our alumni” section.

El professor Àngel Lozano ha guanyat un important guardó internacional
Àngel Lozano, investigador del nou Grup de Comunicacions Mòbils del Departament de Tecnologies de la Informació i les Comunicacions, ha guanyat un dels guardons internacionals més prestigiosos al món en l'àmbit de la Teoria de la Comunicació.
Li ha estat atorgat per la Societat de la Comunicació de l'IEEE ( l'Institut de Enginyers Elèctrics i Electrònics). Es tracta del guardó Stephen O. Rice 2008 concedit pel seu treball " Optimum Power Allocation for Multiuser OFDM with Arbitrary Signal Constellations", realitzat conjuntament amb Antonio Tulino i Sergi Verdú de la Universitat de Princeton (EUA).
Un treball que optimitza les transmissions OFDM
La majoria de sistemes digitals de comunicació moderns, incloent ADSL, WiFi, ViMAX i la Televisió Digital Terrestre, entre d'altres, utilitzen una tècnica de modulació anomenada OFDM (Multiplexació per Divisió de Freqüències Ortogonals). La seqüència de bits a enviar es fragmenta en un gran nombre de parts, i aquestes parts es transmeten per separat en forma de senyals situades en freqüències 
adjacents (línies de color blau del gràfic de la dreta). El receptor detecta les diferents senyals i reconstrueix la seqüència original. Àngel Lozano ha comentat que "amb aquesta estratègia de "dividir i conquerir", cadascuna de les senyals constituents ha de transportar molts menys bits i el procediment esdevé molt més senzill, la qual cosa confereix al sistema notoris avantatges".
Una d'aquestes avantatges és que es poden aplicar diferents nivells de potència a cadascuna de les senyals, depenent del soroll o distorsió que pateixin, optimitzant el funcionament de cadascuna d'elles per separat i permetent, al mateix temps, velocitats de transmissió majors i també un menor nombre d'errors en la detecció.
Com el seu autor ha destacat "en aquest treball hem mostrat com es pot dur a terme aquesta optimització de potències. La solució que aportem generalitza un resultat ja conegut però que només s'aplicava a una estructura de senyals específica i poc pràctica. Amb aquesta nova solució l'optimització queda resolta per a qualsevol estructura de senyals, incloent les més emprades per les noves tecnologies de la comunicació abans esmentades".
Àngel Lozano es va incorporar fa un any a la Universitat Pompeu Fabra provinent de l'empresa Bell Labs i de la Universitat de Columbia (EUA), on ha estat exercint com a docent. Dirigirà el nou grup de recerca en Comunicacions Mòbils que ha estat recentment reconegut com a Grup de Recerca Emergent per l'AGAUR.
L' IEEE és l'associació internacional més important en el seu àmbit, els orígens de la qual es remunten al 1884, amb personalitats com Edison o Graham Bell. Actualment està integrada per més de 360.000 membres de 175 països diferents i integra professionals i tècnics que exerceixen dins l'àmbit de les noves tecnologies: enginyeria computacional, telecomunicacions, electrònica de consum, entre d'altres. La seva missió és promoure la creativitat, el desenvolupament i compartir els avenços sobre les tecnologies de la informació, l'electrònica i les ciències en general per a benefici de la societat.
