The Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DICT) at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Barcelona, invites applications for a quantum field theorist for communication engineering to give support in the preparation of a report on the quantum reinterpretation of some quantities involved in information transmission.

Most of the current information-theoretic analysis of communication systems are based on idealized models which disregard the constraints that physics impose on them. The candidate will bring knowledge in theoretical physics at a Master level to help in better understanding these constraints. We seek a candidate aiming to start/pursue a research career, ideally a junior candidate with a MSc in Physics with interest in information theory. In this sense, experience in quantum field theory/quantum electrodynamics is required; experience in information theory is desired. A strong record of publications and strong programming and analytic skills are required. International experience in other research groups will be highly valued. Candidates with an interest in pursuing doctoral studies in the area will be favoured.

The UPF is a young, modern, public university that, in just twenty-five years, has earned a place for itself among the best universities in Europe. Its DICT is a highly competitive academic department with its faculty organized around the following research areas: multimedia technologies, computational biology and biomedical systems, computation and intelligent systems, and networks and communications. The DICT has been awarded the “María de Maeztu” distinction of excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, the only university department in Spain to achieve this in the field of engineering.

The position is financed by the State Research Agency (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with reference TEC2016-78434-C3-1-R.
