CRCI seminar on multilinguism

10.01.2024

On July 4th 2022 the EUTOPIA Connected Research Communities granted an aid to the Connected Research Community Incubator (CRCI), which includes the following researchers: Jenny Brumme (UPF), Joan Costa Carreras (UPF), Oliver Currie (University of Ljubljana), Monika Kavalir (University of Ljubljana), Richard Smith (University of Warwick), Christopher Strelluf (University of Warwick), Rik Vosters (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Wim Vandenbussche (Vrije Universiteit Brussel).

The CRCI’s objective was to answer the question “How can we reduce present-day European conflict through knowledge of historical multilingualism, language conflict, and language policy?”. The grant made it possible to organize a seminar at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in the Poblenou campus, on October 27th and 28th 2022, titled “How can we reduce present-day European conflict through knowledge of historical multilingualism, language conflict, and language policy?”.

There were nine presentations, including Costa Carreras’, “The language standardisation conflicts Catalan undergoes: are they now the same that Pompeu Fabra (1868-1948) addressed? Are they addressed in the same way?”. Eight podcasts were recorded there as well, including Costa Carreras’ “The language standardisation conflicts Catalan undergoes: Are they now the same that Pompeu Fabra (1868-1948) addressed? Are they addressed in the same way?”. Additionally, a monograph was prepared with articles from these researchers, which will be published in 2024 on the International Journal of the Sociology of Language. Costa Carreras’ article has the provisional title of “Variedades dominantes y no dominantes en catalán: pasado, presente y futuro”.
