IULA mourns the death of Giovanni Parodi

01.12.2020

Giovanni Parodi Sweis, professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile) and specialist in discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, died on November 14, 2020. He was director of the graduate programs in linguistics at his alma mater, PUCV, where he held several management positions. He was a member of the Chilean Academy of Language and editor-in-chief of the journal SIGNOS.

He was the author of a large scientific production, of which we highlight some of his best known books: Relaciones entre lectura y escritura: una perspectiva cognitiva discursiva (1999), Lingüística de corpus: de la teoría a la empiria (2010) or La comprensión de textos escritos. La teoría de la Comunicabilidad (2014). He was also a promoter and editor of collective works, such as Géneros académicos y profesionales: Accesos discursivos para saber y hacer (2008), and the English version Academic and Professional Discourse Genres in Spanish (2010).

Giovanni Parodi visited the Pompeu Fabra University, as he maintained good friendship and scientific links with the GRAEL group of the Department of Translation and Language Sciences, as well as with the IULATERM group of IULA, because of their shared interests in specialised discourse. These links have been maintained because his research group hosted several PhDs from the IULA who have joined as professors at the PUCV, such as Sabela Fernández, Irene Renau or Rogelio Nazar.

IULA members want to convey our condolences to family, friends and colleagues.
