Most subjects in the 3rd and 4th year, and elective ones, are taught in English. In 1st and 2nd year, students can choose bwtween Catalan/Spanish group or English group. Therefore, there is the opportunity to study the whole degree entirely in English.
A B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is highly recommended for students enrolling in the degree.
One of the most important challenges in our society is how to make sense of the unprecedented volumes of data generated on a daily basis. Social networks, personalized medicine, recommender systems or smart cities, which are present in our daily life, are clear examples of this phenomena. Data Science is an emerging discipline at the interface of Statistics and Computer Science that includes a set of principles to analyze and extract knowledge from large-scale data to support decision making.
Such a revolution requires a unique engineering profile with knowledge and competences that go beyond the traditional engineering.
The new degree on Mathematical Engineering in Data Science from the Pompeu Fabra University is designed for talented mathematicians who are interested in pursuing sophisticated theory relevant to modern application domains requiring large-scale data analysis.
This degree provides, on the one hand, the fundamental skills that allow to process and organize large-scale volumes of information automatically. On the other hand, it provides the required statistical and machine learning tools to extract information from these data and to help in the decision making process.
It proposes a solid training in mathematics and computer science that the student can extend to different types of data such as natural language, images, video, audio or music, as well as in those knowledge specific areas that use of massive data, such as personalised medicine, social network analysis, logistics or business, among others. Finally, it will be possible to delve into the mathematical techniques that are very promising in current research in data science.
The graduates in Mathematical Engineering in Data Science by the UPF acquire throughout their studies both general and specific competences. The general or transversal competences enrich the personality and can be applied profitably to the professional life in any social or economic area. These include oral and written expression in English (without neglecting Catalan or Spanish), and train graduates to work in interdisciplinary teams, and to work autonomously and with a clear motivation for quality.
The specific competences acquired by our graduates are those necessary to develop activities in a technological and business environment where the data are analysed. They will enable them to have a solid understanding of the methods of current data science and to adapt to the future evolution of this science both in terms of theoretical and practical development. This competition is essential in such a new and changing environment as the data science sector.
The programme's curriculum includes compulsory internships, which are to be undertaken from the third year of the course.
The ESUP formalizes, every course, around 200 agreements with enterprises, research groups and other organizations of the TIC field such as: Atos Spain, Deloitte, Everis, Keonn, Fundació ESADE, APFUTURA, Mobile Media Content, Telefónica I+D, Roche, etc.
The main motivations of the approximately 120 students who carry out internships every course are: acquiring new knowledge, knowing nearer their future job and being able to widen the possibilities of working insertion.
When it comes to selection criteria of the internships' centers the highlights are motivation towards the tasks to develop, interest towards the sector or enterprise field and the motivation towards the pre established competencies. It also appears the establishing of professional contacts and the getting to know an enterprise.
The aspects valued more positively are: acquisition of working experience, learning, economic remuneration, the rapidity and simpleness of the management and the variety of centers offered in the working stock market.
The competences covered by this degree are much in-demand in the job market, and according to major consulting firms, this is expected to grow in the next years. Many institutions have also expressed strong necessity of data scientists in areas such as health or adaptability of public spaces in cities.
The department responsible for this degree, has been recognized with the distinction of Maria de Maeztu for its project in Data Science and is the only engineering department in the state that has achieved it, This point endorses the formative capacity in investigation of these studies.
In the Polytechnic School we are convinced that studying a whole degree in English can be a distinguishing feature and an additional competence in the curriculum of graduates, which will allow them to be in a better position when looking for a job and have a clear international projection. This is why we want to be the first public Catalan university to offer the possibility of studying three engineering degrees completely in English.
Therefore, from year 2016-17 a group of each subject in the syllabus will be open in which the teaching will be given completely in English (theory, practice, seminars, exercises, exams…).
The School offers a first year group with 80 vacancies, common for the degrees in Computer Science, Telecommunications Network Engineering and Audiovisual Systems Engineering. To access this group you will have to request it in the moment of formalizing the enrolment.
In case there are more applicants than vacancies, these will be given in order with the criterion of the admission mark to the studies.
No compulsory requirement is requested, and there will not be any eliminatory level test for students who ask to access the English group. However, it is recommended that you have a level equivalent to a B2 in the European framework of reference for languages (equal approximately to the First Certificate in English).
Once started the year, the student will have to stay in the English group of all subjects until the term ends. You will only be able to change to the Catalan and Spanish groups within the following terms.
