The 2030 Agenda, adopted by the United Nations in 2015, includes 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and 169 targets to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs refer to the five P areas: partnership, peace, planet, people and prosperity, and cover the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainability.

How does UPF contribute to achieving these objectives?

UPF has taken on this global commitment, viewing it as both a challenge and an opportunity.

Together with other Catalan universities, UPF has signed the declaration, The commitment of Catalan universities to the Sustainable Development Goals: towards a transformative education for a new world and the University System Action plan for Achieving the 2030 Agenda. The ultimate objective of this plan is to set in motion the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to the Catalan university system. There are currently a number of different working groups involved in the plan.

UPF wants to contribute to social change also through culture, and understands that from its natural activity as a centre of knowledge emanate numerous initiatives that go beyond the academic environment and that call for mechanisms to improve the environment. For this reason, an SDG has been added, 17A. Cultural and linguistic diversity.

One of the most relevant projects related to teaching is UPF’s innovation network, which is implementing plans to design new teaching materials with a focus on problem-based learning (PBL), project-based learning (PjBL) and Service Learning (SL) in order to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and generate a collaborative network of teachers for this purpose.

At the heart of its mission, UPF looks to ensure coherence in its commitment to the SDGs in the different action areas: education and teaching; commitment to society; research and transfer, and strategy, management and governance.

Particularly noteworthy is UPF’s international programme for generating and transmitting new knowledge around the concept of Planetary Wellbeing, which is fully aligned with the SDGs.

The new Horitzó 2027 program includes these commitments and strategic challenges..

We encourage the university community to share their actions, experiences and tasks, in strategy, management and governance, education and teaching, research and transfer and in the area of social commitment. You can contact us at  [email protected]
