Introduction to the Department of Economics & Business

Since Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF)'s beginning in 1990, the Department of Economics and Business has evolved into a leading centre for research and teaching. The Department ranks among the most outstanding departments of Europe, and was rated sixth in the Tilburg University Economics Ranking 2004-2008 in terms of faculty publications in top-five rated journals. Being a department of economics and business it is fairly large and heterogeneous, bringing together an international community of more than 20 different nationalities.

The Department is heavily involved in teaching at the undergraduate level. The BA programmes offered at UPF have systematically been in the top rankings as prepared by the Spanish journal El Mundo, with the UPF BA in Economics coming in first in Spain and the UPF BA in Business second, in a country well-known for its reputed business schools. The Department is also involved in Ph.D. and Master programmes.

Intellectual life in the Department centers around a variety of weekly research seminars (see the Seminar Schedule) in the Department's research areas of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Experimental and Behavioural Economics, Applied Economics (labour, public and development), Industrial Organization, Finance, Management, Statistics and Operations Research, and Econometrics. In addition, the Department is host to a large number of visiting scholars and lecturers. As a result, students and faculty are exposed to a continuously fresh flow of researchers whose work is on the frontiers of knowledge in their fields.
