Course details
- Contact hours: 45 contact hours (combined with 30 hours of autonomous work, it reaches 75 teaching-learning hours)
- Type of course: Face-to-face or online (depending on the level)
- Location: Ciutadella Campus, Poblenou Campus or Campus Mar (depending on the group)
- Term calendar: October-December / January-March / April-June
- ECTS credits: Up to 3 ECTS credits for (non-Catalan speakers) undergraduate UPF students according to the current legislation. Each quarterly Catalan course awards 3 ECTS credits. Erasmus or exchange students can also obtain credits for these Catalan courses: in order to do so, you will need to send the certificate to the academic coordinator of your home university (FAQ). If you are a UPF undergraduate student, you will need to send the certificate to the secretary of your studies.
- UPF certificate: if you pass the course, approximately three weeks after the end of the course you will receive a UPF certificate indicating the CEFR level achieved by email.
- Number of students per group: 10 minimum; 30 maximum
- Who can enrol on the course: UPF community members and the general public, over the age of 16.
- CATStudies diploma: each quarterly course is equivalent to 3 ECTS credits, and only 7 ECTS are needed to obtain the CATStudies diploma, which aims to promote knowledge of the Catalan language and culture among members of the UPF community (more information).
Entry requirements
You can enrol directly on the level you think you have to take. In order to confirm your enrolment on a level higher than A1, you will have to demonstrate your level by:
- sending a certificate to [email protected]
- taking a free level test
We will confirm your enrolment on the course once you have demonstrated your level and, if necessary, we will change the level you have initially selected.
Fee: €270
- Subsidized fee for the UPF Comunity members: €60
- CATStudies Diploma discount: Free course for those UPF students that only have to complete one more course to reach the 7 ECTS needed to request the CATStudies Diploma.
IMPORTANT: If you are a student or a worker of the UPF Group (BSM, ELISAVA, BGSE, ESCI, ESIM, IBEI and/or TCM, and some PRBB profiles), we regret to inform you that you are not eligible for the subsidized fee and that you will have to pay the standard fee of 270 euros. Additionally, you are not eligible for the UPF-specific qualification CATStudies.
Idiomes UPF will check that all applicants are eligible to attend the course. Otherwise, Idiomes UPF will have no other option but to withdraw the applicant from the course.
- The fee includes the teaching, the additional material and the UPF course certificate.
- If the student decides to leave the course, please note that under no circumstances will the fee for the course be refunded. Only if Idiomes UPF cancel a course because the minimum required (10) is not reached, will the full fee for the course be refunded.
Schedule for the 2026-2027 courses

If you are studying at UPF (exchange students and undergraduate, master's, and PhD students who are not Catalan speakers) and you are making an effort to learn Catalan, you can apply for the UPF Diploma in Catalan Language and Cultural Studies (CATStudies). [more information]
For each language course you take, you will earn 3 ECTS credits, up to the 7 ECTS required to obtain the UPF Diploma CATStudies.
New CATStudies discount: you can enroll for free in the last course you need to reach the 7 ECTS required for the CATStudies Diploma (whether it is a quarterly Catalan language course, a culture course, or a Catalan conversation course).
