22 & 23/01/2019 | Set-Theoretic Methods for the Social Sciences: A Primer for Qualitative Comparative Analysis

27.01.2019

On 22nd and 23rd January we organized a course on Set-theoretic methods addressed to to PhD students in social sciences.

The course was conducted by Prof. Carsten Schneider (Central European University). He is an expert in the use of set-theoretic methods applied to social sciences, which are becoming increasingly popular.

Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) is the most formalized of these set-theoretic methods.

In a first step, the course spelled out the fundamental concepts that characterize the set-theoretic methodological perspective. Then the course proceeded by outlining the basic principles and practices of QCA, both the crisp-set and the fuzzy-set version. Throughout the course data from published articles for illustration was used.

The objective of the course was to equip participants with sufficient knowledge to distinguish better from worse applied QCA and to make some first steps towards performing an own QCA.

Attendees were able to gain research-practical insights, to discuss best practices, and to get a first introduction to the relevant software packages, focusing on the use of the R packages QCA and SetMethods. Participants were also encouraged to bring and use their own data.
