40 Years of Spain in the European Union
40 Years of Spain in the European Union

In 2026, Spain marks the 40th anniversary of its accession to the European Communities, a milestone that transformed the country's political, economic, and social trajectory. Four decades later, European integration remains a central pillar of Spain's development, shaping public policies, economic modernization, democratic consolidation, and the country's role on the international stage.
To commemorate this anniversary, the European Union Society (EUS) is organizing an event that brings together leading experts to reflect on the achievements, challenges, and future prospects of Spain's participation in the European project. Drawing on both academic research and institutional experience, the discussion will assess the impact of European integration on Spain and explore how the European Union continues to evolve in response to contemporary challenges, including geopolitical tensions, economic competitiveness, democratic governance, and the green and digital transitions.
The debate will feature Ana Mar Fernández Pasarín, Director of the EUGLOB Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and Sergi Barrera, Director of the European Parliament Office in Barcelona. The session will be moderated by Javier Arregui, Professor of Political Science at Pompeu Fabra University and Director of the Barcelona Center for European Studies (BACES). Together, they will offer complementary perspectives on the past, present, and future of Spain's relationship with the European Union.
