First ethnographic visit of the Transgang project

Jose Sánchez García, scientific coordinator of the project, meets with TRANSGANG Tunisian Team in CAWTAR Headquarter in Tunis.

25.04.2019

The last 2 of April of 2019, Jose Sánchez García, Area Ethnographic Coordinator, meet with Sihem Najjar and Soukeina Bouraoui to sign the agreement between CAWTAR and UPF. This agreement formalizes the collaboration between the two research institutions to implement the ethnographic fieldwork of the project in Tunis. After the signature, Jose Sánchez García presented the main lines of the project to the Tunisian Team formed by Soukeina Bouraoui (director), Sihem Najar (scientific coordinator and field researcher), Lilia Othman Challougui, Hamida Trabelsi Bacha and Jihène Kristou as main researchers; and Anis Belgacem, Boutheina el-Adib Hamida Jridi, Safa Rahmen, Houssem Souaf, Salima Toumi, Saoussen Fray and Linda Barbouchi as research assistants; and Arbi Dridi as translator.

3th April was devoted to make an ethnographic prospective of groups and places. Four local youth groups were contacted during the ethnographic tour. In short, the ethnographic potential to meet the project's objectives appear clear. However, it is fundamental to take into account local aspects such as low crime in the country, wasta's clientele system that links street youth with authorities and corrupt police, complicating the investigation, and above about the use of the term "gang" in the area.
