BACES Barcelona Center for European Studies
Disinformation and AI: What Are the Implications for the European Union and Its Citizens?

This year's EU Citizens' Debate will explore one of the most pressing challenges facing contemporary European democracies: the growing interaction between artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and disinformation. Organised by the Barcelona Center for European Studies (BACES-UPF) in collaboration with the Fundació Catalunya Europa, the session aims to reflect on the political, social, and regulatory implications that AI-driven disinformation poses for the European Union and its citizens. The debate will address how emerging technologies are transforming the information ecosystem, influencing democratic processes, and challenging the EU’s capacity to regulate digital platforms while safeguarding fundamental rights and democratic resilience.
The event will begin with a short keynote address by Trisha Meyer (Brussels School of Governance, Vrije Universiteit Brussel), which will provide an introductory framework for understanding the main challenges and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence and disinformation in Europe. Following the keynote, a round table bringing together Alvaro Oleart, Alejandro Flores, and Lorenzo Marini will offer different academic and professional perspectives on digital governance, platform regulation, political communication, and fact-checking practices within the European context. The session will conclude with an open Q&A discussion, encouraging audience participation and collective reflection on how European institutions and societies should respond to the evolving challenges of the digital age.
