Marcel Mauri A lecturer in the Department of Communication, expert in the history of journalism, deontologics and news ethics, he has been the delegate of the rector for students since the beginning of the 2014-2015 academic year. Working with the General Secretary, his role is to facilitate students' participation in University life.

- What does the position of the delegate of the rector consist of and what tasks does it have?

The delegate for students is the person delegated by the rector who is responsible for relations with students' delegates, associations and the UPF Student Council. This means that my main task is to facilitate participation by students at Pompeu Fabra University.

- What are your objectives when taking up this post?

The main objectives are, first, to make it as easy as possible for the current associations and participation groups at UPF to keep doing the valuable work they do. And second, for students to participate increasingly actively in both the university's decision-making bodies and in these platforms for students.

- How do you see the framework for student participation that we currently have at the University?

UPF has a good base of very varied associations that actively participate in university life. Perhaps the challenge is to get all students to know about them and to see them as a necessary space for participation.

"UPF has a good base of very varied associations that actively participate in university life".

- In what areas does student participation take place?

Very varied areas, and that is very rewarding. From the student unions which work towards various rights affecting the student world, to more sector-based associations that aim to foster debate and reflection at the university in areas as diverse fields as economics, law, communication... including groups of a more cultural nature. And of course, as well as all the course delegates and representatives of the senate and other university bodies which ensure that the students' voice is represented at the university.

- What are the main channels for student participation at UPF?

The UPF Student Council is the main body for channelling students' participation. It includes course delegates and the representatives of associations.

"The UPF Student Council is the main body for channelling students' participation".

- Are all the representation mechanisms used to their fullest advantage?

Well, I think the challenge we have this year is to make the Student Council assume its rightful role as the body which channels a large proportion of student representation. However, students have an active (and very necessary) role to play in other areas of representation, such as the Senate.

- How students can influence the governance of the University?

The students' vision of the University is essential for improving the institution. In this respect, the discussions they have in both formal forums (such as the Senate) and informal ones (such as in talks or debates) are essential for taking the University forward.

- What could be done to increase their level of involvement?

Increasing student involvement is one of the main challenges we have set ourselves at both the students' delegation and the University Community Assistance Service. First, it involves raising the profile of the work the associations are doing among all students. The Associations fair which took place in October is a first step, but we need to go further. It is one of the commitments we have made to the associations and the Council of Students: to look at how we can make it easier for students to get involved and participate.
