UPF is the most internationalized university in Spain according to the new ranking designed by the CyD Foundation

The new ranking provides a comparison of the work of 39 Spanish universities based on a multidimensional user-driven approach shared by the European Union.

The European Union recently introduced the U-Multirank, an international ranking of universities designed using a multi dimensional and user-driven approach in which users can choose the settings to produce their own rankings. The CyD Foundation was the Spanish partner in this project, acting as the intermediary between U-Multirank and higher education institutions, and now presents its own tool, adapting the European methodology to the Spanish context. The CyD Foundation tool allows users to compare the work of Spanish universities in six areas assessed based on 30 indicators: teaching and learning; research activity; knowledge transfer; international orientation; and contribution to regional development.

An analysis of the UPF's activities shows the good results obtained in most of the indicators related to international orientation, research and knowledge transfer, in which the University is in the highest performance group in 19 of the 23 indicators assessed. However, it needs to improve its position in some of the indicators related to teaching (which for example CyD relates to the ability to attract bachelor's and master's degree students from elsewhere in Spain) and those related to regional development (which CyD relates to the percentage of revenue coming from the autonomous government, for which UPF is ranked at the lowest level).

The figure below shows the UPF position in the six indicators related to international orientation.

The CyD ranking uses the same methodology and data as the U-Multirank. However, unlike the European tool, which allows users to compare the work of universities using multiple indicators, the CyD tool limits the number to six. This factor, and the fact that indicators are only offered by performance group (high, medium and low) with no league tables, makes it more difficult to create lists or rankings of universities. This is an approach that the tool's creators have aimed to avoid.

In addition to the institutional ranking, the CyD tool also provides thematic rankings based on four knowledge areas (business studies, physics, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering) for which the indicators evaluated are modified slightly depending on the field. In future editions, the tool's creators plan to include more universities and to increase the knowledge areas.
