Logo of the ranking UPF is considered one of the two most efficient Spanish universities in Europe, according to the second edition of the State university ranking by the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CyD), involving sixty public and private centres (72% of the total), and which analyses 560 degrees and seven knowledge areas.

The ranking is based on a total of 31 institutional indicators, spread across the categories of Teaching and learning, Research, Knowledge transfer, International orientation and Regional engagement.

The universities that receive a number of indicators of high performance (on a scale that differentiates between high, intermediate and low performance) are the Autonomous University of Barcelona (with 21 indicators of high performance) and Pompeu Fabra (with eighteen), followed by the universities of Navarra and Deusto (with fourteen).

The performance results are not absolute, but are established in comparison with the data of all participating universities and are weighted according to the size of the institutions.

Eighteen indicators with high performance, eight of which in research and five in knowledge transfer

Of the 31 indicators assessed,  UPF achieves high performance in eighteen. As for the remaining thirteen indicators, in six it achieved intermediate performance and seven were not scored, which means that data are missing or insufficient to calculate the indicator.

In Research it achieves high performance (in eight of the nine indicators that comprise it) in external research funding, teaching and research staff-FTE publications, normalized impact, highly cited publications, interdisciplinary publications, post-doctorates, current research periods and civil service teaching and research staff without research periods.

In the Knowledge transfer section, UPF stands out for publications with companies, patents granted by teaching and research staff-FTE, patent applications with private companies and publications cited in patents.

Finally, it achieves high performance in various items of the three remaining categories:  Teaching and learning (graduation rate [master's] and official graduation [master's]); International orientation (courses offered in a foreign language (bachelor's degree), international teaching and research staff and international publications; and Regional engagement (r egional publications).

A practical, customizable tool

The ranking of the CyD Foundation, which allows comparing between different universities, also offers information about students' degree of satisfaction with the different areas of knowledge of the centre at which they are enrolled.

The ranking, which uses the philosophy of the EC's U-Multirank, made from relative indicators, aims to be a practical, interactive tool where it is the user who seeks and chooses the universities based on categories that s/he deems important.

It is designed to provide information and decision criteria both for future students, university administrators, researchers, companies and other social stakeholders wishing to establish links with a university.
