Isaac Baley, lecturer from UPF's Department of Economics and Business and Barcelona School of Economics (BSE), has been recognised in the first edition of the Exception Teaching awards from the European Economics Association (EEA). The prizes aim to recognise lecturers and researchers who, through their teaching, have contributed significantly to disseminating economics knowledge.

Baley has been awarded the Junior category prize. The jury rated his tutoring abilities with both bachelor's degree and doctorate students very highly. He designed and coordinated the sessions within his area of specialism, paying particular attention to the real, specific needs of different types of students.

The prizes aim to recognise lecturers and researchers who, through their teaching, have contributed significantly to disseminating economics knowledge.

On the bachelor's degree programme, he explores the particular features of postgraduate programmes in Europe and the USA (length, focus, work opportunities), application procedures and information about scholarships. In the case of the doctorate programme, he shares his perspective on academic life, the research process, preparing research proposals, working with co-authors, work-life balance, spoken communication skills and writing referee reports, or navigating the labour market.

On the jury’s part, they also valued very highly the way in which he introduces current economic topics into his classes. Baley, together with lecturer Davide Debortoli, from the same department, has designed a debating activity in which students must prepare opposing points of view on a specific topic, using arguments based on economic theory and empirical evidence. Among those topics dealt with in the classes were the future of the euro, the role of fiscal austerity and the consequences of international trade.
