Fernando Guirao, professor at the Department of Economics and Business of the UPF, has received the distinction of Jean Monnet Professor of History "ad personam", a permanent recognition to the overall quality of their academic work. It is awarded by the Executive Agency for Education, Audiovisual and Culture of the European Commission.

Professor Guirao thus becomes the first professor Jean Monnet History "ad personam" in Catalonia and the third in Spain. He will receive 45,000 Euros to develop the project "History matters! Learning from the past in times of crisis". The project has a duration of three years and it includes research, teaching and outreach in the field of the history of European integration.

The Jean Monnet program, which began in 1990, includes several actions with the aim to promote excellence in teaching, research, reflection and debate around the European integration in higher education institutions, both within and outside the EU. It also aims to promote awareness and understanding of issues relating to European integration among academic experts and European citizenships in general, in addition to supporting institutions and associations with relevance in this area.

Fernando Guirao holds a degree in Philosophy from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1986) and obtained the PhD in History and Civilization at the European University Institute in Florence (1993). Since 1996 he is a member of the European Union Liaison Committee of Historians, a group of teachers established in 1982 to disseminate the research on the history of the after-war's Europe. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of European Integration History, the only international scientific journal in the field of the History of European integration.

One of his most recent publications is the edition of the volume "Alan S. Milward and a Century of European Change" (London and New York, Routledge Studies in Modern European History series, 2012), edited with Francis M. B. Lynch and Siegfried M. Ramirez Perez.
