The Faculty of Translation and Language Sciences has created a Talent Prize programme with the aim of enhancing the talent of the best baccalaureate students wishing to study degrees offered by the Faculty. In total, it will award eight prizes of 500 euros each, two for each degree and track it offers:  the Degree in Applied Languages and Degree in Translation and Interpreting for the English track, the Degree in Translation and Interpreting for the French, German or Catalan sign language track and the Double degree in Translation and Interpreting and Applied Languages.

Carme Bach, dean of the Faculty of Translation and Language Sciences, explains that these prizes are essential for “enabling us to enhance the talent of students embarking on degrees offered by the Faculty”. “ It will help to produce better students, who are more involved in university life and who will become more competent professionals”, she explains, adding that “we believe this initiative will lead to better student results, which will also be of importance to the Faculty”.

The selection of prize-winning students will be based on their entrance mark, out of 14, attained by the student in the University Entrance Exams (PAU). Students with the highest entrance exam mark will be selected.

The prizes enjoy the support of four companies from the linguistic mediation sector: Alpha CRC, a translation and localisation company; CÁLAMO & CRAN SL, a company that offers editorial services and a pioneer in training editing professionals; LINGUASERVE I.S. SA, a company specialised in translation, language services and multi-language solutions, and Lucy Software Iberica SL, that offers technology and automatic translation services. Bach explains that these companies have been chosen because “they could be future employers of the Faculty’s degree students”.

The importance of linguistic mediation

“In this highly globalised world, it is more crucial than ever to have a mastery of languages, which is why studies in Translation and Applied Languages are so important”, asserts Bach. The degrees that offer these prizes have a specialisation “that responds to the growing needs of our society”. What sets apart the degree students from the Faculty of Translation and Language Sciences is that they have a specialised translation profile in two languages (LSC, German, French or English), as well as their native languages (Catalan and Spanish), in the fields of finance, law, the media, literature, science and technology.
