Position: Rector of UPF since March 2023 and full professor in the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences
Education: PhD in Veterinary Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) (2000); she did postdoctoral studies at UPF and ETH Zurich.

Laia de Nadal is a professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences at UPF. On 6 March, she took office as rector of Pompeu Fabra University, replacing Professor of Financial Economics and Accounting Oriol Amat. Previously, from 2021 to 2023, she had been vice-rector for Knowledge Transfer, a newly created vice-rector’s office tasked with bridging the gap between the university and society through knowledge transfer, innovation and entrepreneurship.

She holds a PhD in Veterinary Medicine (specializing in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) (2000). She completed postdoctoral studies as a Ramón y Cajal researcher at Pompeu Fabra University and Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zurich.

She is co-director of the Cell-Signalling Research Group, affiliated with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine of Barcelona (IRBB), which studies how cells respond and adapt to changes in their environment. She has published numerous scientific papers and reviews and is a member of various national and international projects. She sits on several scientific boards and is the 2012 and 2020 recipient of the ICREA Acadèmia award. She has also been deputy director for research and transfer of the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (DCEXS) (2015-2019).

What motivated you to run for rector of the university?

It was a very carefully considered personal decision. The most important factor for me when I was deciding whether to run for rector of UPF was the commitment – a commitment we should all have – to public service. UPF has given me the opportunity to develop professionally, and I felt I had a duty to give back.

Over the course of my career, thanks to the experience and trust of others, I have become more actively involved in management, first as a member of the faculty board and the department’s teaching committee and, later, as academic secretary and deputy director of the department itself. In 2021, Rector Oriol Amat asked me to join his team, to be responsible for the knowledge transfer area. I was thrilled to accept. Those two years allowed me to learn more about UPF’s governance and the potential of collaborative work at a strong, well-positioned institution like ours. Finally, a few months ago, I decided to take the step of leading a team and asking my colleagues, friends and community members to place their trust in me to take on the responsibility of leading and representing UPF for the next four years.

UPF has given me the opportunity to develop professionally, and I felt I had a duty to give back.
