Vicarious trauma among social science researchers: prevention and rehabilitation

Drawing from concrete examples from research in traumatized post-war communities, the facilitator, Dr. Nena Mocnik, will provide a framework for understanding the impact of emotionally demanding research, either when collecting primary data during field research or when being exposed to graphic and traumatic resources. In the first part of this interactive workshop, participants will learn about managing boundaries, conscious and unconscious risk-taking, recognizing emotional fatigue and vicarious trauma, as well as how to effectively prepare for the exposure during the research. In the second part, we will review strategies for self-care, resilience practices, constructive and transformative responses to vicarious trauma, and the support systems available, emphasizing best practices. This is an interactive workshop where participants are invited to reflect on their own research practice and share their experiences and could be beneficial to researchers at different stages and with various research interests (working with violence, social exclusion and isolation, environmental changes, oral histories, political movements).
