Curricula

Carmen Pérez Vidal is professor of English Language Studies and Language Acquisition at the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University, where she is a member of the consolidated research group Language Acquisition from Multilingual Catalonia (ALLENCAM), which she led from its inception in 2004 until 2017. In addition, she is a sworn translator for English and French.

With a degree in Spanish and Anglo-Germanic Language Studies (UAB, UB), she completed a masters in Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading (UK), and gained her PhD with a thesis on bilingual English/Catalan acquisition, through a case study (UB, 1995). Her subsequent research focused on second and foreign language acquisition, both through conventional study programmes and immersion programmes and in particular on the effects of ERASMUS exchanges. These issues have featured in the five projects she has led and which have been financed by the government ministry, a European education project and recently a European cooperation project on Scientific and Technical Research (COST).

She has published five books and 78 book chapters as well as numerous articles which have appeared in leading international books and journals. She has also directed fourteen doctoral theses. She has evaluated and delivered training for the Catalan government’s Department of Education and to different local educational bodies.

Before taking on the position of EUTOPIA delegate, she founded and led the Language School (PEI-Idiomes UPF, 1999-2004) and was vice rector of Language Promotion as well as rector's delegate for languages (2004-2012), a stage during which she designed and implemented the Plan of Action for Multilingualism (PAM) at UPF. More recently, she has coordinated her department’s doctoral programme (2018-2023).
