Description:
The workshop Interdisciplinary Approaches to Early and Late Bilingual Acquisition Research (IABAR), taking place on 26–27 February 2026 at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Poblenou Campus, Room 52.217 (and online), brings together leading scholars working on bilingualism and language acquisition from a range of disciplinary perspectives. The event is organized with the collaboration of the Department of Translation and Language Sciences of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the EUTOPIA University Alliance, and the ALLENCAM research group, and is funded by the Language Learning journal and the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Over two mornings, invited speakers from several European institutions will present cutting-edge research on how languages are learned, processed, and represented across the lifespan, drawing on approaches that span phonetics, phonology, morphosyntax, and lexical acquisition.
A central goal of IABAR is to foster dialogue across traditionally separated subfields. The contributions showcase experimental work using state-of-the-art methodologies, with a particular focus on how insights and tools developed in one domain can inform research in others. By highlighting thematic commonalities and shared theoretical and methodological concerns, the workshop aims to stimulate interdisciplinary synergies and open up new avenues for future collaborative research. The event is expected to be of interest to faculty members, as well as to doctoral and master’s students working in linguistics, cognitive science, and related disciplines, who will benefit from exposure to current debates and approaches in language acquisition and bilingualism research.
The program of the workshop is available in pdf format here.
