The Delegation Générale à la langue française et aux langues de France, in collaboration with the Network of Terminology and Neology of Romance languages REALITER, has just published the Vocabulari panllatí de rugbi – llengües romàniques i basc (2023), on the occasion of the celebration in France of the Rugby World Cup 15s in 2023 and the Rugby World Cup 13s in 2025. It was necessary to update the existing vocabularies and to give a voice to the languages spoken on the rugby pitches.

The vocabulary includes 208 concepts, organized thematically (types of rugby, positions, general techniques, defensive techniques, offensive techniques, rules, fouls, penalties, infrastructure, materials and player equipment). The vocabulary languages are French, Catalan, Spanish from Argentina, Spanish from Spain, Basque, Galician, Italian, Occitan, Brazilian Portuguese, Portuguese from Portugal, Romanian and English, which means that the 208 concepts refer to approximately 2500 denominations. The definitions are in French, and all the terms are accompanied by the corresponding grammatical category in each language.

On the Catalan side, the people that participated in the project are Professor M. Àngels Martínez Salom and her students of the Terminology Management course for the 2020-2021 academic year, the external advisors Laura Bertran, journalist of Ràdio Arrels and responsible for rugby broadcasts in Catalan, and Miquel Cornudella and Manel Turon, who have been rugby players. Mercè Lorente, from the IULATERM group, oversaw the coordination of Catalan part of the project and the final revision and editing tasks.
