PUBLISHING OF TERESA CABRÉ'S NEW BOOK, 'Terminology' (John Benjamins)

18.09.2023

In September 2023, the new book by Teresa Cabré, published by John Benjamins in English, has come out of print with the title Terminology. Cognition, Language and Communication. It initially was planned as a two-volume book, the first dedicated to the fundamentals of terminology as a field of knowledge and the second dedicated to the various applications of terminology, however it has finally been published in a single volume of 370 pages, divided into the two same parts. The book is the translation into English of a selection of articles written in different languages and published since 1999 in journals or as book chapters, some of which are now difficult to find. The selection and structuring of the book have been made by the author herself. This publication responds to a long-standing demand, since in the field of romance languages people interested can easily read the original texts published in Catalan, Spanish, French or Portuguese, while many linguists and students of other languages have expressed the need to have access to a greater number of articles in English by the author, who is an international reference of Terminology.

The first part, «Fundamental elements of terminology as a field of knowledge», includes texts on three fundamental aspects of terminology: the review of proposals made by other authors and the foundations of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT); the rethinking of the terminology framework, focusing on specialized discourse and communication; and the object of study of terminology, i.e., the terminological unit. The second part of the book, «Terminology at the intersection between interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity», contains articles on work methodology, international standards and terminology education, as well as on the intersections between terminology and fields such as documentation, translation, neology and language policy.

The publication has been organized as part of the IVITRA Series: Research in Linguistics and Literature, directed by Vicent Martines. The texts were translated by Besharat Fathi, Sheila Queralt and Steven Norris, who also carried out the linguistic revision of the entire book. Mariona Arnau, Elisabet Llopart and Jorge M. Porras-Garzón have collaborated in various editing and proofreading tasks. Mercè Lorente has coordinated the translations and the editing process. You can read the summary and table of contents at John Benjamins' website.
