Performance assessment (CEFR 2001 and 2008) means evaluating what someone knows or is able to do regarding the application outside of the classroom of what he or she has learned within it.

Unlike achievement assessment, this kind of assessment adopts a perspective from outside the specific teaching-learning context. Therefore, it characteristically establishes standardized criteria for assessment, which are independent of the situation in which the didactic action has taken place. The assessment tools used to judge the performance in a particular competency or task are thus homogeneous, regardless of the group of learners.
