In order to be admitted to Information, Communication and Audiovisuals Technologies PhD Programme offered by UPF, candidates must provide accreditation that they have obtained an accredited undergraduate degree (Bachelor degree or recognised equivalent degree from an accredited Higher Education Institution).
Moreover, they have to proof that they have obtained or are in position to obtain an accredited graduate/master's degree (equivalent to a Spanish Master Universitario/Oficial, Master's of Research.... ) which enables them to access a Phd programme in their home country.
To access a PhD programme at UPF you must have an official university degree and a master's degree, and have passed at least 300 ECTS credits.
You can also access the doctorate with:
- an official Spanish university degree or equivalent, as long as at least 300 ECTS credits have been passed and a level 3 of the MECES is accredited;
- a degree from the European Higher Education Area (non-Spanish) that accredits a level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, as long as this degree entitles to access a PhD in the issuing country;
- a foreign title (non-EHEA) of a training level equivalent to a Spanish university master's degree and that entitles to access a PhD programme in the issuing country;
- a doctoral degree.
Mandatory documents to be submitted
- A photocopy of the undergraduate degree/diploma or Certification/proof of degree completion (Bachelor degree or recognised equivalent degree from an accredited Higher Education Institution).

A photocopy of the official final undergraduate transcript.
If you have finished your Master's degree when you formalise your application, you will need to send us the following documents:
- A photocopy of the graduate/master's degree/diploma or Certification/proof of degree completion.
- A photocopy of your official final graduate/master's transcript .
However, if you have not yet completed your graduate/master's studies when formalising application, you will need to provide us with the following documents:
- A signed declaration of obtaining your graduate/master's degree before the commencement of the PhD programme.
- A photocopy of the provisional graduate/master's transcript.
If the diploma or the academic transcript are not written in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese or Italian, you will also have to include the respective sworn translations into Catalan or Spanish.
In order to access to a doctoral programme at UPF, you need to have completed 300 ECTS credits, 60 of those have to correspond to an official graduate, research orientated master's programme.
Students holding one of the following degrees are not required to have completed a Master’s degree:
- Spanish DEA (Diploma de Estudios Avanzados) according to RD 778/1998
- Suficiencia Investigadora according to RD185/1985
- undergraduate degree of 300 ECTS credits (such as Medicine...)
- undergraduate degrees with the equivalence to MECES level 3, according to RD 697/2014
All candidates must also present the following mandatory documents (please provide a photocopy)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Copy of the Master's Thesis, or copies of publications co-authored by the applicant, or a research proposal.
- Accreditation of English competence level B.2
- A personal letter in which the applicant explains his/her interest in the chosen research field and our university.
- Identity Card or Passport.
Optional documentation
- Letter of support from a researcher in the Department of Information and Communication Technologies eligible to be a thesis supervisor
Although it is not compulsory at the time of admission, the submission of a letter of support by students will be considered a great advantage. Applications accompanied by a letter of support will be given priority. Students failing to submit a letter of support must specify one or more DTIC research areas in which they would be interested in doing research.

Letters of recommendation (maximum of two)
Each letter of recommendation must be official with the logotype of the institution of the signatory of the letter. The letter must contain the signatory's contact details (telephone, address, e-mail). It is very important that the letter includes the signatory's e-mail (and that this is an institutional address), as the Selection Commitee may decide to contact him/her to ask for additional information.
Document specifying the financial situation of the student
In this document, the student should state whether he/she has a scholarship or funding, and if so, the financing institution. Otherwise, it may state whether the student is awaiting a decision regarding a scholarship that he/she has applied for, and whether he/she would be willing to join the PhD program even if the fellowship is not granted. The student can also include all the information of this nature that he/she may consider relevant.
