Research Internship with credit recognition
The Human Biology degree provides, in the 3rd term of the 3rd year, the possibility of taking 16 ECTS of elective credits. This is also the case of the 3rd term oh the 5th year of Medicine degree. These credits can consist of:
- The elective subjects offered by the degree itself.
- The mobility with Bilateral Agreements (Erasmus and others) established by UPF.
- External Research Internship managed by the students themselves.
This text establishes the basis of the last modality. External Research Internship participation implies the knowledge and the acceptance of these basis.
What I have to do if I want a credit recognition for a research stay?
- Read these basis.
- Find a laboratory in a research center, university or company outside Catalonia that wants to guide you.
- Send to [email protected] a motivation letter and an acceptance letter.
Objectives
- Apply and complement the knowledges acquired with academic training.
- Bring the student closer to the reality in one of professional fields where he/she can carry out his/her activity when he/she has graduated.
- Develop skills that favour their incorporation to the job market.
Destination
Internships be carried out at any research center, university or company with recognized solvency (check the section about evaluation), outside Catalonia. In particular, it is recommended to stay outside Spain.
Stays in research centers where a student's direct relative is working won't be accepted. If this was the case , even if it was obvious after the stay was authorized or completed, the credits would not be recognized.
Duration
The stays can be developed en two modalities:
- A single 5 week period at full time during any summer after completing the second year, that it could be valued with 8 credits ECTS, then you will have to complement it with 8 ECTS of elective subjects.
- A 10 week period at full time that it take place partially or completely the third term of the third year (Human Biology) or the fifth year (Medicine), and it will be equivalent to 16 ECTS. For the medicine students enrolled in the 2020 curriculum (who began their studis in the 2019-20 academic year), acording to the curriculum, it will be equivalent to 14 elective credits, but to get the Erasmus grant at least they must be enrolled of 15 credits ECTS at the host university.
It is important to have in mind that taking research internship is not a reason for changes in remedial exams dates.
Request of previous validation of stays
So that the Mobility Coordination could verify that the conditions to recognize credits for a future stay are achieved, the student must submit the following documentation to [email protected]:
- Motivation letter, where the studient will explain the reasons why he/she choose the internship that he/she propose and what he/he expect to obtain.
- Acceptance letter, where the person who tutors the student mentions:
- Tutor name and email
- Student acceptance
- Stay dates
- The tasks that the student will carry out
The Mobility Coordinator will assess if the acceptance letter contains the requires information and, if it is necessary, he will request its rectification.
If the stay is in Europe, it is admissible and practical that the student submit the Training Agreement (Training agreement HB / Training agreement Medicine) as an acceptance letter, because it already contains the necessary information and also it is the document that allow to apply the Erasmus Internship grant (see the grant section below).
The Mobility Coordinator will assess if the external internship proposals match with the conditions that are fixed in these basis for academic recognition. The students can appeal the Coordinator decision contacting with the Faculty deanship ([email protected]).

So, the students who can apply for the MOBINT and Internship Erasmus grants must have in mind that the deadline of theses grants are around september and desember of the year before, respectively, and to apply for these grants it is important to indicate if the stays have academic recognition. It is the student responsability check the deadlines and the conditions of these grants, because it may vary from year to year.
Assessment
The submission of a report is an essential requirement to evaluate the internship. The student will provide a report detailing a summary, an introduction, methods, results, discussions and a bibliography of the research carried out during the internship period. The report must be submit to [email protected] within 30 days after the end of the internship.
The assessment components are:
70%: grade given by the external tutor according to the assessment document. The student must submit this document to [email protected] at the end of the stay. The Coordination reserves the right to request to the tutor the appropiate clarifications.
If the overall grade given by the tutor is less than 5, the credits will not be recognized. In the same way, if the tutor reports that the student has behaved clearly worse than required, or if he/she has repeatedly not going (for any cause) to the provided activities of the internship, the credits will not be recognized.
30%: evaluation of the submitted report. The Mobility Coordination may request the opinion of experts in the field to evaluate the report.
Grants
The students who go to European centers outside Spain can access to Erasmus Internships grants, as long as the duraton is longer than two months.
For destinations around the world, you can apply for MOBINT grants. In this case, the student must request his/her mobiity credential to OMA.
It is the student responsability check the deadlines and conditions of these grants, which may vary from year to year.
Internship agreements
So that the student can start the internship stay, according to state regulations on external academic internships in companies and institutions, an internship agreement must be processed between the University, the host institution and the student, before leaving, through Campus Treball application. If the student obtains an Erasmus Internship grant, he/she doesn't need to formalize an internship agreement.
The student must be enrolled in at least one subject of the current academic course.
