Welcome to a new edition of ‘Quiztime’, the 360upf magazine section that puts your knowledge to the test. This issue’s featured guest is Antoni Tàpies i Puig.

Antoni Tàpies i Puig (1923-2012) is one of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century in Spain, and 2023 marks the centenary of his birth. A clear exponent of informalism, he combined in his art tradition and innovation in an abstract framework laden with symbolism. His striking compositions include characteristic symbols such as crosses, moons, asterisks, letters, numbers and geometric figures.

Tàpies began his career in Barcelona, closely linked to Catalan surrealism. In 1950, he left for Paris, and it was there that he fully immersed himself in informalism. He began to paint in a highly matterist style, incorporating recycled and waste materials, as well as his hallmark bits of string, paper, sand, straw and marble dust. His relationship with Pompeu Fabra University is unique, to the extent that UPF’s Ciutadella campus is home to the Tàpies Space, a singular artistic treasure.

Whether to find out how much you know about him or learn more about his close relationship with UPF, we encourage you take this quiz!
