Resum: One common approach to English derivation is to differentiate affixes based on the easiness with which they are activated for lexical output, i.e. highly productive vs. poorly productive. Each group displays different traits and an intrinsic nature but, for reasons not always evident, the study of highly productive affixes (e.g. -ness, -ly, super-) has been traditionally favored in the literature to the detriment of less productive ones. This seminar will focus on affixes belonging to the lower area of morphological productivity in order to detect features in common, illustrate the possibility of morphological revitalization after apparent obsolescence, and ponder on how the existence of rival processes may play a role in their morphological context.
