Oriol Puig-Cepero published the chapter "El Sahel: cambio climático y migraciones" in the book "Cambio climático y migraciones. Su impacto e implicaciones para el desarrollo", edited by Joan Lacomba and Alexis Cloquell.

The chapter argues that, contrary to prevailing narratives which present environmental degradation as the direct and sole cause of mass displacement, the analysis shows that mobility in the region is a historical, structural and multifactorial phenomenon, linked to both climatic dynamics and social, political and economic factors. Far from being a mere consequence of environmental deterioration, mobility is established as an adaptive mechanism and a resilience strategy deeply rooted in Sahelian communities. The text warns against the tendency to instrumentalise the climate–migration nexus in security terms, particularly within the framework of European border control policies, which not only distorts our understanding of the phenomenon but also increases the vulnerability of local populations. From a political ecology perspective, the chapter debunks simplistic views of desertification, poverty or mass exodus, and positions the Sahel as a space where environmental transformations, historical trajectories and contemporary geopolitical dynamics intersect.
