Mireia Vargas-Urpi, visiting professor of the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University, has participated in a pioneering project on the situation of court interpreting. The project TIPp (Translation and Interpretation in Criminal Proceedings) has analysed a corpus of 55 recordings of oral hearings with interpretation from and into English, French and Romanian and has detected important deficiencies in the interpretation that is made for the accused who does not understand the language of the trial. Among the most relevant results, it has been shown that 54% of what is said during the oral hearing is not interpreted, either in liaison interpreting (aloud) or by whispered interpreting (chuchotage). In fact, there is an average of 2.7 turns per minute that are not interpreted, which is alarming given that the right to interpretation is essential to grant the right to information of the person being judge, and also to avoid any state of defencelessness. Moreover, in the parts of the hearing that are actually interpreted, an average of 21 serious mistakes per hour is committed. These mistakes are usually additions, mistranslations and omissions, while there are also other mistakes more related to the language of the court, such as the use of an inappropriate register or lack of accuracy. The study has also found out that interpreters use non-renditions to express their own ideas or give advice to the defendant (an average of 45.5 interventions per hour).
