Resum:  A primary goal of the generative enterprise has been to understand the primitives of the human language faculty, the fundamental elements of grammar. Over six decades, and put somehow crudely, this quest from primitives has shifted from seeking to identify such primitives first as rules, Phrase Structure Rules and Transformations, later as Principles and Parameters, and more recently as features. In this talk I will first present two case studies of how we can understand grammatical primitives without stipulating features: pronominality and the adjective category. I will then highlight the need to understand the interplay between Universal Grammar and learning algorithms if we are to gain a more profound understanding of grammatical primitives.
