UPF's bachelor's degree programme in Political and Administration Sciences is intended to produce specialists in the different aspects of improvement and innovation in politics and governance. On the basis of the quality theoretical training in political science it offers, students will be able to analyse and assess the political situation at any given time. The programme seeks to pave the way for them to acquire knowledge and skills that will help them analyse, decide upon and implement innovative strategies for improving governance and public sector management. Having finished the four academic years the students will acquire the "Bachelor's Degree in Political and Administration Sciences" title.

As of the academic year 2013-2014, it will be possible to study UPF's bachelor's degree programmes in Political and Administration Sciences and in Law simultaneously.

Objectives and competences

The latest advances in political and administration sciences, new professional demands and the course's European context have all been taken into account in the design of this bachelor's degree programme. It provides general training that combines knowledge related to political and administration sciences, economics, law, history and sociology with instrumental content geared to research.

The programme's basic and compulsory subjects give students sufficient knowledge for the purpose of professional activity in politics and administration. The various tracks open to them enable them to steer their future career towards a more specific field and a subsequent specialization (a master's degree programme).

The programme's ultimate objective is to produce professionals who have a wealth of scientific knowledge, great awareness of their context, and the skills required to operate in the European arena, in addition to being familiar with new technologies, able to think critically and committed to the principles of democracy.

The programme's graduates will be capable of:

Identifying the main theories and approaches corresponding to political and administration sciences.
Recognizing the structure and form of operation of political systems, their institutions and public authorities, as well as the dynamics of the main actors and of citizens in general.
Recognizing the principles of democracy and how democratic processes work.
Engaging in public resource management and planning based on the corresponding legal and economic framework.
Understanding the international arena and the European Union's structure and operation.
Using quantitative and qualitative research methods to study political phenomena, and working proficiently with information and communication technologies and political communication techniques.
Identifying opportunities for resource and cost optimization.
Establishing and maintaining a network of professional contacts for taking advantage of synergies and opportunities.

Student profile

Students taking this bachelor's degree programme (code RUCT) should have good analysis and synthesis capabilities, organizational and planning skills, and a notable ability to communicate, orally and in writing, in both their mother tongue and, if possible, a second language. Openness to interacting with others and to working in a team is also important, as is a critical and self-critical attitude.

Generally speaking, students should be interested in the public sphere. They ought to enjoy reading and knowing about major historical, social and contemporary political problems. Additionally, they must feel comfortable using new information and communication technologies and be sufficiently mathematically minded to be able to work with basic statistical and quantitative analysis tools.

In the programme's final year, students have to submit an academic project based on their internship in an institution, a political organization, a company or a public authority. Undertaking such internships enables students to connect with the world of professional practice and apply the theory they have learned. In the resulting academic project, they should thoughtfully develop the theoretical and practical knowledge they have acquired in their studies.
