Teaching Staff Committee
The Teaching Staff Committee is made up of all members of the bodies of full university professors, tenured university lecturers and full university school professors, as well as full professors and senior lecturers in the department, and is chaired by the department’s director or the lecturer to whom the director delegates this power.
It has decision-making capacity with regard to paragraphs i) and j) of Article 11 of the Department Regulations, as well as with regard to determining the need for openings for teaching and research staff and requesting the publication of calls to fill them, although it must at all times be ensured that no lecturer participates in decisions affecting proposals for the creation of new openings in categories superior to his or her own.
The Strategy Committee is a delegated committee of the Board consisting of all full-time teaching and research staff members in the department who hold a doctoral degree. It is tasked with defining the strategic lines of the department’s postgraduate programme and assessing and defending the consistency thereof with its members’ lines of research.
The Academic Committee is the collective department body responsible for defining, updating and assuring the quality and coordination of the doctoral programme, as well as the progress of the research and training of each doctoral student. Its duties and internal organization are regulated by the UPF Doctoral School Regulations (resolution of the Board of Governors of 13 July 2011, amended by resolution of the Board of Governors of 20 March 2013).
Some of the Academic Committee’s most important duties include:
Appointing or changing each doctoral student’s tutor.
Appointing or changing each doctoral student’s thesis supervisor.
Authorizing or withdrawing authorization for joint supervision of a thesis.
Authorizing or withdrawing authorization for the co-tutoring of a thesis.
Authorizing doctoral students’ periods abroad.
Authorizing the submission of each doctoral student’s thesis.
Authorizing part-time doctoral studies.
Authorizing extensions of the deadline for submitting a thesis.
Approving temporary leaves for doctoral students.
Annually assessing each doctoral student’s activity record and the tutor’s and thesis supervisor’s reports.
The department’s Research Committee is tasked with:
Discussing, coordinating and implementing measures to encourage and support research.
Strengthening the research infrastructure of the department’s areas.
Assessing the implemented research strategies.
The Research Committee consists of three members: one from Sociology, one from Political Sciences, and a third from one of the other fields of knowledge present in the department. The appointment of the members from Sociology and Political Science will be made by their respective sections and the third member will be appointed by the Standing Committee.
The Research Committee exercises, by delegation, the functions that the Regulations assign to the department and, specifically, to the Department Board, in terms of research, as provided for under Articles 2, 4, 6 and 11 thereof.
