The objective of the PhD in Communication is to train researchers at an international level in the main fields of communication as well as closely related disciplines of the social sciences and humanities. This programme leads to the preparation and defence of a doctoral thesis, a process that finishes with obtaining a doctoral degree.

  • MODALITY: Full time program
  • DURATION:
  • Enrolled from the 2023-2024 academic year: Duration 4 years

The doctoral thesis must be deposited before the end of the 4th full-time academic year, counting from the time the doctoral student enrolled. The Academic Commission of the Doctorate in Communication program does not contemplate the authorization of any extension.

When the doctoral student has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the duration will be a maximum of 6 years full-time. The degree of disability must be accredited and reported in the management computer application.

  • Enrolled before the 2023-2024 academic year: Duration 3 years

The doctoral thesis must be deposited before the end of the 3rd full-time academic year, counting from the time the doctoral student enrolled. Doctoral students may request a one-year extension if they anticipate that they will not be able to deposit it after this ordinary period. The Academic Commission of the Doctorate in Communication program does not contemplate the authorization of a 2nd extension.

By Agreement of the Committee of the Doctoral School and the CAD, the ordinary extension for doctoral students who do not plan to deposit before the end of the third academic year will be granted automatically, without having to apply, unless thesis supervisors issue a negative report indicating the opposite by the deadline indicated in the procedure.
  • ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES: face-to-face and compulsory over the first three years.
  • LANGUAGES: academic activities are offered in Spanish, Catalan or English, and this last language is becoming increasingly important.

PhD works are developed within the research lines of the different research groups. Academic activities are carried out within the areas of the Department of Communication research groups in collaboration with the groups and departments of other national and international universities, as well as with companies and institutions in the sector.

The Doctoral Programme in Communication is integrated into the Doctoral School of Pompeu Fabra University and, like the rest of the UPF doctoral programmes, has obtained the accreditation “In progress of excellence” (the highest possible qualification) of the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU).
