Format and cover
All UPF theses must comply with the editing and format criteria. It is necessary to follow the criteria and model templates, as well as the instructions for requesting coverage at La Factoria.
Length of the doctoral thesis
As established in article 4 of the Academic Regulations for submitting and defending doctoral theses of the Department of Communication, theses submitted to the Department of Communication must have the following extension:
- Unitary thesis: a recommended length of 90,000 words and always more than 75,000, not counting the appendices.
- Thesis by compendium of publications: According to the new regulations, these theses must include two main sections: the research report and the compendium of publications resulting from the research. The report presents the research globally and explains the research coherence. We reccomend that it contains at least these sections: Introduction / Theoretical framework / Methodology / Results / Conclusions, with an approximate length of 20,000 words. The compendium contains the publications derived from the research. For each item that is part of the compendium, both the complete reference data (including the DOI, ISSN or ISBN numbers as the case may be), as well as the publications themselves must be provided.
- Thesis for an applied research project: The written report should have a length of 40,000 words (excluding the annexes) and it is recommended to provide the following sections: Theoretical framework / Objectives / Methodology / Results / Conclusions / Bibliography / Report of the collaborating institutions (if any). Thesis content (graphic, audio-visual or interactive material) must be delivered when the thesis is submitted in a portable memory. This material will be treated as evaluable content of the report (not as an appendix) and must be correctly referenced in the report.
Thesis language
If the language of the dissertation is not Catalan, Spanish or English, it is necessary to apply to the Doctoral Academic Committee (CAD) to defend the thesis in another language common for scientific communication in the field of knowledge of the thesis.
Plagiarism warning
The Department of Communication will not tolerate cases of plagiarism or copying or active or passive collaboration with this kind of fraudulent practice in the work carried out by students. The sanction against this will consist of opening a file that may conclude with the doctoral degree not being obtained.
Reproduction of sentences or paragraphs from texts by other authors without citing their original source, be it a website, a book, a journal or the work of other colleagues, will be considered plagiarism.
