Learning-Service, a teaching methodology that boosts the students’ ethical and civic skills.

UPF’s CLIK and the Polytechnic University of Madrid recently launched a book on this new learning methodology. The book includes a chapter called the 'Impact of Learning-Service from the perspective of educational innovation'.

The teaching methodology "learning-service" breaks with force in the university education. This method aims to improve the learning of students by involving them in projects located within real services of society, either in voluntary institutions or in private companies. In the university courses in which this approach is used, students not only develop a sense of responsibility, reciprocity and solidarity, but also civic commitment to their fellow citizens.

Evaluating the performance of students in courses that use “learning-service” as a methodology, however, is not always easy. In fact, Latin American universities, pioneers in the application of this method, have long been concerned with designing feasible evaluation systems that can also be applied in the field of higher education. With the aim of deepening this line of research, a large group of professors from twelve Spanish universities have published, together with the experience of the Latin American Center for Learning and Solidarity Service and the support of the National University of Distance Education (UNED), the book Aprendizaje-Servicio. Los retos de la evaluación (Narcea ediciones, in spanish). Within this manual, teachers will find proposals, reflections and experiences that will help them determine how to evaluate the learning of their students in Learning-Service courses.

The Pompeu Fabra University has collaborated in the writing of this work, providing examples of educational innovation through the Center for Innovation in Learning and Knowledge (CLIK).
