From June 27 to 30 the CLIK participated in the 2017 Staff Training Week of the University of Lausanne (UNIL), called "Empowering Students and Staff". Over four days, Sílvia Ruiz, CLIK's Multilingualism Technician, received highly varied training by professionals from multiple Swiss public universities. Twenty other university management professionals from different European universities joined also the Staff Week.

The activities

The 2017 Staff Training Week focused on the identification of institutional and personal strategies for the internationalization of the participating universities, in different areas:

  • International mobility, with the sessions "Switzerland and European programmes" and "Diversity toolbox for staff working in intercultural context", and the workshop "Exchange of good practices on midi mobilité".
  • Communication and language, with the sessions "Become a Proficient Communicator", "Globalization and English as a lingua franca" and "Use of non-sexist language to foster gender equality".
  • Career Services, with the session "Self-assessment of soft skills for students".
The programme also included two university-related visits: the IOC Olympic Studies Center, Olympic research center and headquarters of the International Olympic Committee; the Olympic Museum and the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe, the archives of the French economist and creator of Europe, Jean Monnet. In addition, participants could admire the campus facilities of UNIL, considered one of the greenest in Europe.

A networking opportunity

During the stay, the CLIK was able to exchange good practices with its partner center at the University of Lausanne, the Centre de Soutien à l'Enseignement (Center for Teaching Support). After an extensive presentation on the CLIK, Deborah Domínguez, a specialist in continuous education for the UNIL’s faculty, praised the CLIK’s activity and was, together with the center's director, Emmanuel Sylvestre, open to collaborate with us.

The conversation with Brigitte Forster, director of UNIL’s Centre de Langues (Language Center), was also a relevant one. She spoke with Sílvia Ruiz about the UNIL’s language policy and its language training programmes for teachers and students.

Finally, Prof. Bernhard Altermatt, a sociologist with expertise in multilingualism and minority languages from the University of Freibourg, was also able to make room in his agenda to discuss possibilities for collaboration with the CLIK’s Multilingualism Area.
