The 19th Innovation Workshop on cross-cutting teaching topics looks for the relationship between neuroscience and teaching methodologies

The workshop, addressed to the UPF PDI, gathered 36 participants from the 8 departments of the University.

13.01.2020

David Bueno, doctor of biology and professor of genetics at the University of Barcelona, led the session to reflect on how knowledge of neuroscience can help improve student learning.

How can we promote effective learning in our classes? Some of the ideas that came out of the workshop are:

  • Become a student confidence figure: We learn from that person we trust. If the teacher does not give me confidence, I can also learn, but not efficiently
  • Take an active and motivated attitude: Mirror neurons make us learn by imitation. The motivation of the teacher will feed the student
  • Use emotions to generate efficient learning: Emotions generate efficient learning, but not all emotions, as fear inhibits learning. That is why teaching activities should be considered as an opportunity to learn
  • Slow down the class to increase student attention: Explaining gossip or anecdotes in the classroom increases student attention and allows the student to reconnect
  • Encourage student curiosity: Encourage them to search for information, get them to work in a group to interact, make open explanations in your classes encouraging student intervention.

The development of the workshop was notable for the interest of the participants, who from the outset participated contributing their approaches and their teaching experiences.

Finally, a draw for 2 copies of David Bueno's latest book, Break Your Head. Culture as the engine of brain re-evolution.

The Center for Innovation in Learning and Knowledge (CLIK) organizes two workshops a year, with the aim that UPF teachers have the opportunity to reflect on their teaching from a particular perspective. So far, topics such as gamification, the flipped classroom, storytelling, social media or design thinking have been addressed. We appreciate the participation of the assistant teachers.
