1. Protect yourself from the fire to prevent exposing yourself to the smoke given off.

2. Raise the alarm as soon as possible by calling one of these numbers:

3. If necessary, and only if you feel capable and the fire is small and localized, use the extinguisher to smother it. In all cases, the follow the steps below:

- Cover your mouth and nose with an item of clothing or a handkerchief (wet, if possible).

- Prepare the extinguisher following the instructions on the label. Generally, you will need to do is as follows:

1. Unhook the extinguisher, holding it by the nozzle or fixed lever at the top and place it on the floor in a vertical position.

2. Remove the safety pin by pulling on the ring. If it is a CO₂, extinguisher, you must hold the nozzle by the insulated handle intended for this purpose and make sure not to aim it towards other people. If the extinguisher has a fitted hose (ABC multi-purpose powder type), hold it by the nozzle to avoid the uncontrolled release of the contents.

3. Press the handle to discharge a small test amount of extinguishing product.

4. Aim the extinguisher towards the base of the flames with a sweeping movement keeping it at a minimum distance of one metre from the fire.

- If your clothing has caught fire, do not run: seek help. Throw yourself to the ground and roll to extinguish the flames. A fire extinguisher must never be aimed at a person.

- If necessary, you may use a fire hose. Nevertheless, bear the following recommendations in mind:

1. Cut the electricity supply to the burning area. If it is not possible, do not use the fire hose.

2. Open the cover of the cabinet or break the safety glass and pull out the fire hose reel.

3. Take the nozzle and connect it to the fire hose reel if they are not attached.

4. Throw it vigorously until the hose is completely unrolled.

5. It is recommended to use the fire hose with the assistance of someone else. Involve a third person to open the stopcock and then help you with the hose.

6. The hose supply valve must be opened slowly and with caution.

7. Whenever possible, the water should be sprayed onto burning objects, unless the fire must be attacked from a distance.

8. Wet the ceiling and walls with rotating movements to cool the enclosed area.

9. Once the fire is under control, attack the pockets of fire one by one, with the minimum amount of water.

Remember that fire detection and protection means are indicated by specific signage:

When it is deemed necessary to evacuate a building, a siren will sound indicating so. At the Dipòsit de les Aigües and at the PRBB, a pre-recorded message will be broadcast over the tannoy and in soundproofed areas, a stroboscopic light will be activated. From then on, you must follow these steps:

1. Head for the outside, following the signposted evacuation routes leading to the emergency exits.
   For smooth evacuation and to ensure people's safety, it is very important to take into account the following recommendations of the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia's Directorate General of Emergencies and Civil Safety:

• To avoid causing obstacles and delays, do not waste time picking up personal belongings.
• Move quickly but without running, without knocking over or pushing others.
• Once evacuation has started, never go back to look for colleagues or to collect personal belongings.
• Always evacuate in a downwards, never an upwards direction, except in cases where it is impossible to exit the building.
• Never use the lift. You could get trapped inside in the event of a power cut, and the lift well also acts as a smoke chimney.
• Do not descend the staircase if you see there is smoke. In this case it is best to stay in a room with windows to the outside in order to make yourself seen. Meanwhile, close the door and, if possible, cover the gap beneath the door with wet clothes or cloths.
• Do not open any door if you think there is fire behind it. Before opening a door, make sure it is not hot and that no smoke is coming from beneath it.
• If despite everything you are forced to cross a smoke-filled area, breathe through a wet handkerchief and crouch or crawl to move.
• If your clothes have caught fire, do not run; throw yourself to the ground and roll. Never use a fire extinguisher on a person.
• If you have reduced mobility that hinders evacuation, you should follow specific guidelines or remain at one of the established rescue points:

   Once the situation is under control and people's safety is restored, the end of the emergency will be declared and occupants will be informed of the return to normal and will be allowed to return to the building.

Upon receiving the notification, the staff taking the call will inform two of the first-aiders of the work centre and the auxiliary services assistant covering the area where the injured person is located. The first-aiders will assess the type of medical assistance required and will follow the instructions below, depending on the case:

Call Marta González (extension 2192), when the person concerned is a member of the Administration and Services (PAS) or Research Support Staff, or Maite Sastre (extension 1632), when the person concerned is a member of the Teaching and Research Staff (PDI). With the information provided, the referral note for the provision of healthcare will be processed.

Second case. When a person is a UPF employee affiliated to MUFACE, refer them to their regular health centre.

Third case. Other employees (ICREA, CIBER, service companies contracted by UPF, etc.), refer them to the dispensary of the mutual benefit company for occupational accidents and diseases to which their company is affiliated.

In any of the above cases, after the first intervention, the auxiliary services assistant will inform the reception of the location of the person and the steps followed. One of the first-aiders, at the end of the intervention, will inform as to developments by completing an emergency medical care notification.
