Pompeu Fabra University has taken a leap forward in the World University Rankings 2025 recently published by Times Higher Education (THE) and is the second Spanish university in this classification. It is the Catalan university to most improve this year. Globally, it is ranked 176th, and 78th in Europe. It stands out especially in the field (pillar) of Research Quality, in which it comes in 114th position worldwide, but also improves for Research Environment, Industry, and International Outlook.

Globally, UPF is ranked 176th, and 78th in Europe

UPF, out of a total of 100 points and compared to last year, has risen on the global scoreboard (climbing from a range of 55.9-58.6 to 60.1) and conserves or improves its scores in all five areas: 90 points for Research Quality (research influence); 83.9 for Industry (knowledge transfer); 82.2 for International Outlook (international teaching and research staff, students and research collaborations); 44.6 for Research Environment (volume, income and reputation); and finally, 36 points for Teaching (learning environment).

The biggest improvements by the University are for International Outlook (up 7.5 points), Research Environment (a more than six-point improvement), and Industry (up 5.5 points), while it remains stable for Teaching and Research Quality. Proof of the good results for International Outlook and Industry is the fact that the score obtained by UPF in these two pillars, in relation to all of the universities considered in the ranking, is in both cases around 40 points above the average.

The 21st edition of the WUR, recognized as one of the most comprehensive assessments of university performance in the world, this year ranks 2,092 institutions (185 more than last year) from 115 different countries. Its methodology, which changed in the previous edition, includes eighteen performance indicators to evaluate institutions in five key areas, each with a different specific weight: Teaching (29.5), Research Environment (29%), Research Quality (30%), International Outlook (7.5%), and Industry (4%).

The top positions in the general classification are held by the universities of Oxford (for the ninth consecutive year), the MIT (which rises from third to second position), and Harvard (from fourth to third). In Spain, UPF shares a podium with the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
