Exhibition “Provisori” (May 23 – July 18, 2024)

Provisori
Venue: Exhibition · Àrea Tallers Gallery
Dates: May 23 – July 18
Description
The exhibition Provisori is an artistic intervention created by Pep Duran, composed of monochromatic garments and theatrical clothing racks known as burros. These items are accompanied by phrases related to the art world, printed on small pieces of paper and pinned in place. The exhibition compels viewers to alter their habitual route, encouraging them to conceive the space as a temporary refuge, a provisional dwelling.
If scenography has the capacity to transform space—or spaces—and an installation is not a closed work, Provisori insists on these premises. Its trigger is biographical: the work Pare i mare (Esotro) coexists with burros filled with monochromatic garments. Some of these items feature phrases related to the art world, printed on fragments of paper and attached with pins. These racks—typically used to store film and theatre costumes—function here as walls or partitions, obliging visitors to modify their usual path and to understand the new spatial arrangement as a refuge, a temporary dwelling, a provisional space.
Pep Duran, born in Vilanova i la Geltrú in 1955, is a sculptor, set designer, and art director for cinema. His training began in Vilanova i la Geltrú and continued in Barcelona at the Higher School of Dramatic Art. He has worked extensively in scenography and costume design, exploring concepts such as space, narrative, and the passage of time. His works often bring together objects and memories that seek to emerge from oblivion and acquire new meaning. Throughout his career, he has received several awards, including the Catalan Government’s Film Award for Best Technician in 1989 and the Serra d’Or Award for Best Production in 2005.
An exhibition from the “77 passes” cycle
This exhibition forms part of the collaboration agreement established in 2020 between Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Vila Casas Foundation, which enables the Àrea Tallers Gallery on the Poblenou campus to host exhibitions connected to works shown at Can Framis. The walking distance between the two venues gives its name to the artistic cycle they jointly promote, 77 passes, highlighted during the opening by Pep Duran and Biel Mesquida.
