To expand the city’s urban greenery, UPF has also set out to install green walls on the façades of its buildings. Through collaboration with students from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), an introductory prospective intervention was carried out to ascertain the actions to carry out on the different campuses.

It studies the different possibilities for implementation by analysing Barcelona’s climatology, including the effects of temperatures, rainfall, humidity, salinity and solar incidence, among others, on the design requirements. The irrigation system and the selection of the most suitable plants have also been established in order to confirm the viability of this type of façade, its advantages and disadvantages.

Thus, we currently have a green façade on the Ciutadella campus, located in the square of the Jordi Rubió i Balaguer agora, between the buildings of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and the old military barracks, now in disuse and in an advanced state of deterioration. This façade is intended to give life to a space in the middle that was previously very stony and turn it green. This façade plays with the seasons and offers a different, constantly evolving outlook according to the month of the year.
