ESDHI 2025: a space of international collaboration to rethink health inequalities from an eco-social perspective

On 22 and 23 May 2025, Pompeu Fabra University hosted the international conference ESDHI 2025 – Ecological and Social Dimensions of Human Inequalities, a transdisciplinary space for dialogue organised by the JHU-UPF Public Policy Center (PPC). Over two days, more than 130 participants from 28 countries and five continents gathered to reflect on the eco-social determinants of health inequalities and to explore proposals for a more equitable and sustainable future.
The conference featured 21 speakers and 12 parallel workshops, promoting collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and institutions, and addressing key issues in public health, social justice, sustainability, and the humanities.
“Caring requires slowing down and adapting to the complexity of life — something that the measurable progress of modern economics does not allow,” reflected Nicoletta Dentico, researcher and conference panellist.
Throughout the event, participants generated over 200 live questions, 487 YouTube views, and achieved a digital reach of more than 8,000 people on Instagram, consolidating ESDHI as facilitating an active and engaged international community.
The conference underscored that health inequalities are complex, dynamic, and multidimensional phenomena, deeply rooted in systems of exploitation, domination, and discrimination. Addressing them requires a critical rethinking of education, research, and public policy, and the promotion of collaborative work that transcends disciplinary and national boundaries.
“Reality is not vertical; it is interconnection,” summarised Wendy Harcourt, researcher and conference panellist, capturing the spirit that defined two days of dialogue and shared learning.
The Public Policy Center extends its gratitude to all the individuals, institutions, and organisations that made #ESDHI2025 possible. The invitation remains open to continue building collective knowledge and action towards planetary wellbeing.
