IMISCOE Spring Conference 2023: Organised by Université de Nice-Côte d’Azur

EuroMedMig celebrates IMISCOE’s confirmation that the next IMISCOE Spring Conference will be organised by our partner Yvan Gastaut from Université de Nice-Côte d’Azur. The Conference will develop on 15-17 March 2023 in Nice and wil be devoted to “Postcolonial migrations: Legacies, specificities, mobilizations”. With this topic choice, IMISCOE incorporates a necessary debate to its agenda.

The Conference will discuss the meaning of the so-called “post-colonial” period and migrations beyond former colonial powers considering the weight of the past, legacies and cultural dimension of migrations. It will also approach how colonial ties may continue after ‘independence’, both economically and politically. More specifically, it will try to outline how has the colonial past reemerged since the 1960s through new migration policies and narratives on migrants. Should post-colonial migrations be distinguished from other categories?

The debate will tackle the following aspects:

  • Methodologies: Inventory of major research developments on postcolonial migrations around the world
  • Postcolonial migrations in a socio-economic dimension
  • Diplomatic issues related to post-colonial migration: What relations exist between formerly colonized and formerly colonizing countries around migration?
  • Political management: Examples of specific political practices around postcolonial migrations.
  • The weight of colonisation on the way migrants are viewed in post-colonial societies (literature, cinema, media, web)
  • The feeling: How to study the weight of colonization within the generations resulting from migrations of colonized or former colonized
  • Arts and postcolonial migrations
  • Mobilizations: Anti-racism, repentance, memory

Coordinator: Professor Yvan Gastaut, Université de Nice-Côte d’Azur; URMIS, Nice, France.

More information about the Conference will be shared soon.
