Colloquium Migrations in the Mediterranean: which Research Agenda for the Coming Years?

16.01.2024

On the 23rd of January, the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and EuroMedMig have jointly organized a colloquium on the recently published book Migrations in the Mediterranean, co-edited by Ricard Zapata-Barrero (GRITIM-UPF, University Pompeu Fabra) and Ibrahim Awad (American University in Cairo).

Migrations in the Mediterranean is an open access book that gathers contributions from almost 40 researchers working on migration issues in the Mediterranean. It addresses migration dynamics, as well as their drivers and impacts, from a conceptually broad and regional perspective, while showcasing a plurality of approaches.

The colloquium, which will take place at the IEMed premises, will critically review Migrations in the Mediterranean within the current research agenda and geopolitical migration context.  The discussion about the book will offer an opportunity to review current key questions and challenges in the process of doing research on migrations in the Mediterranean. What are the main challenges researchers face when undertaking migration research? What are the pressing topics, and how will the migration research agenda look in the foreseeable future? How are political developments shaping research? Leading experts and researchers in the field will help us better grasp the implications of current political events and answer these and many more questions that will be addressed during this event.

We are delighted to count on the participation of:

Senén Florensa, Executive President of the IEMed

Ricard Zapata-Barrero, Director of GRITIM-UPF, EuroMedMig coordinator and co-editor of the book

Sari Hanafi, Professor of sociology at the American University of Beirut, President of the International Sociological Association
