First joint podcast episode between EuroMedMig and IEMed on Libya and migratory dynamics in the Sahara!

20.03.2024

In this first podcast episode, Xavier Aragall, EuroMeSCo Migration and Survey Officer at IEMed, and Ainara Huarte, EuroMedMig Coordinator at GRITIM-UPF, had the pleasure to interview a very special guest, Julien Brachet, researcher at the French National Research Institute for Development (IRD) at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, on the migratory dynamics in Libya, the Sahara and the Sahel, and the effects of EU policies in the region.

Julien Brachet shared some first-hand insights on topics such as the impact of border externalization and restrictive EU policies in the region, forced labour in Libyan detention centers, the changing perception and role of so-called smugglers, and the lack of accountability mechanisms in migration governance.

Julien Brachet is a researcher at the French National Research Institute for Development (IRD) at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He researches economic and political dynamics in the Sahara and the Sahel, where he has carried out extensive fieldwork. He knows very well the field, and we are glad to get more first-hand insights. He studies patterns of mobility to and through these regions, with a focus on human migration, trade and transport networks from a historical perspective.

The interview took place on the sidelines of the "Research in Action" Seminar Series (2023-2024) Lecture by Julien Brachet that took place on the 14th of March 2024, jointly organized by GRITIM-UPF and the European Insitute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), and the podcast is framed within the collaboration agreement signed between GRITIM-UPF and EuroMedMig on the one hand, and IEMed in the other hand.
