“Migration Governance Capacities for Mediterranean Cities: A Strategic Urban Agenda of the Next Decade” Report is out!

17.03.2025

We are happy to publish the report “Migration Governance Capacities for Mediterranean Cities: A Strategic Urban Agenda of the Next Decade”. It draws on the key insights, challenges and opportunities discussed during the homonym symposium organised on the 23th October 2024 by EuroMedMig jointly with the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and the Barcelona City Council.

The symposium brought together a number of representatives from Mediterranean cities, organisations and research centres, aiming at facilitating discussions on shared concerns and strategies related to the development of urban migration governance in the Mediterranean for the forthcoming decade based on inclusivity and human rights’ respect.

In particular, topics such as limited ressources and mandates for cites, changing political scenarios and City-State relations, urban alliances and city-networks, urban resilience, data challenges, or the role of non-State actors in urban migration governance were critically discussed. EuroMedMig and GRITIM-UPF researchers Birce Altıok, Ibrahim Awad, Hassen Boubakri, Birce Demiryontar, Eda Gemi, Ivan Martín, Rafik Arfaoui and Dirk Gebhardt were key to foster dialogue and debate.

The report, which has been authored by Xavier Aragall (IEMed) and Ainara Huarte (EuroMedMig, GRITIM-UPF), and coordinated by Gemma Aubarell (IEMed) and Ricard Zapata-Barrero (GRITIM-UPF), follows the thematic structure of the symposium, including the main elements for a diagnosis of the current situation, followed by insights, ideas and proposals discussed that pave the way for further resilient strategies. It also includes examples of best policy practices implemented at the city level, as well as key international initiatives developed by city networks, urban alliances, CSOs or INGOs. Furthermore, it incorporates a toolbox including a series of useful data sources and statistical tools related to urban management, planning, and local migration.
