In 2018, 100% of the energy consumed at UPF came from renewable sources! In response to the demand of Catalan universities, a new contract was signed through the Catalan University Services Consortium (CSUC).

UPF successfully participated in the Energy-Savings Marathon. Promoted by the Catalan Institute of Energy, the campaign was carried out at Mercè Building during February 2020 and it fulfilled the following saving goals:

- Water - from 116 to 86 m3 (-25,9%)
- Gas - from 1.680 to 781 m3 (-53,5%)
- Electricity - from 24.500 to 20.571 kwh (-16,1%)
- CO2 Emissions - from 12.560 to 9.057 kg (-27,9%)

Did you know that long before Covid-19, UPF was already committed to reducing paper consumption? Consult all the information of the "Without paper” project

You can already enjoy the new "Menu for the Planet" in all the UPF cafeterias, a vegan and 100% sustainable proposal

At UPF, the thesis tribunal can participate by video videconference. Find out how and help to reduce the C02 emissions of your their journeys!

Did you know that the roof of the Mercè Rodoreda building has been transformed into a green space to study the benefits of such spaces for people and the city?

The living wall in the Ciutadella Campus agora covers parts of the former military barracks in green

The UPF bars offer vegan and vegetarian options for both breakfast and lunch. People with celiac disease can already find gluten-free options for breakfast, and the university is working to include them in the lunch menu as well

LED lighting is the most efficient and sustainable kind, because of both the materials it uses and how the light is produced. At UPF, LED lighting has been installed wherever possible!

Motion detectors enable savings with regard to both light and air conditioning when a classroom is empty… or when the lecturer isn’t interacting much!

At the cafeterias, choose the menu option without a drink and use the water fountains that have been installed instead

Did you know that free-cooling technology allows us to use cold air from outside to cool indoor spaces, too? At UPF, it has been installed wherever possible

Plastic bags are a thing of the past. Choose paper, now available at all the university’s cafeterias

In collaboration with the Barcelona City Council, we have turned part of Carrer Ramon Turrí into a pedestrian zone

Internal mail between UPF buildings is now 100% sustainable thanks to the university’s new electric van

Air conditioning on the Poblenou Campus is achieved with hot and cold water, in collaboration with the district. The “district heating” initiative makes it possible to cut atmospheric CO2 emissions by 7,000 tonnes each year, equivalent to the amount required to travel 48 million kilometres by car

Did you know that the Ciutadella and Poblenou cafeterias have earned the Catalan government’s Amed (Mediterranean Diet) certification? Learn more about the benefits

When using UPF toilets, use half a tank to flush! This is now possible thanks to the installation of dual-flush toilets in virtually all the buildings

Window sensors automatically shut off the air-conditioning in a room when a window is opened. The university has installed them on the Poblenou Campus and in the Mercè Rodoreda building

One thing you can do to save energy at home is to turn off the burner 10 minutes before you’re done cooking, to take advantage of the residual heat. UPF does this with its coolers. Coolers are turned off 45 minutes before closing but continue to work as a result of thermal inertia

Did you know that timed faucets enable water savings of up to 60%? UPF uses them in almost all its buildings

Teleworking has a direct impact on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by the university community. This academic year, around 190 people have taken advantage of this option

In the cafeterias, skip the plastic and use wooden stirrers instead of plastic spoons. Everything counts

The Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies Office has joined the Zero Waste movement

The vending machines are becoming more sustainable: they already use compostable cups and wooden stirrers

Did you know that under the 2017 Public Sector Contracts Act, all contracts must include environmental criteria? At UPF, we have been doing that since 2013!

UPF is an observer to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

UPF has already signed the Climate Emergency Letter, setting out the commitment of more than 160 universities around the world to working to address climate change

UPF promotes research on issues related to social responsibility through prizes and contests. Check the different modalities!
